Garrison Keillor

Garrison Keillor

  • Nominated by MacLaren Peace of Henderson, Nevada
  • Reason for Nomination - "Because he has become Mr. St. Paul."

General John Vessey

General John (Jack) Vessey

  • Nominated by Jean Witter of Edina, MN
  • Reason for Nomination - "Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he initially enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard in 1939 as a private and rose through the ranks to General. Following retirement, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his efforts forts to account for military personnel listed as missing in action from the Vietnam War. He has been active in many Minnesota-based projects, most recently the Chair of the Minnesota History Center's exhibition centering on Minnesota's Greatest Generation, and the naming and dedication of the new University of Minnesota Veterans Stadium."

Irv Williams

Irv Williams

  • Nominated by Tabitha Courtemanche of Minneapolis, MN
  • Reason for Nomination - "Irv Williams, the 91 year-old tenor sax player who is a Minnesota jazz music legend and a St. Paul institution, has a long history of charming music audiences as well as servers at the St. Paul Grill. Irv arrived in St. Paul in 1942 with the Navy band, and has lived in the Twin Cities ever since (currently in Lowertown). He is so embraced by St. Paul; his picture adorns the cover of the 2010 "Saint Paul Almanac." City Pages once called Irv "either the coolest old guy or the oldest cool guy in St. Paul." This beloved tenor sax player has worked in bands fronted by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Fletcher Henderson, Mary Lou Williams, Billy Eckstine's orchestra and many other jazz luminaries at venues like the Apollo Theater and the Howard Theater, and is a regular performer at the Artists' Quarter and the Dakota to this day. Irv has received proclamations from the City of St. Paul and the State of Minnesota. He had his picture on the official state map in 1990 and has won countless awards for his incredible music. There is probably no dining establishment that is nearer to the heart of Irv Williams than The St. Paul Grill. He is a regular visitor to The Grill (often eating in the bar area, with one eye on those photos). He is always greeted warmly by the hostesses and other servers - many of whom know Irv and light up when he arrives. It would mean so much for Irv to arrive for his usual Thanksgiving meal at The St. Paul Grill, and see his own picture on the wall.
